What is a Barrier Coating?
Barrier Coating is designed to be applied to paper, paperboard or corrugated board substrates in order to provide a moisture barrier, grease barrier or other required barrier properties. Barrier coatings can be used on both Food and Non-food paper and corrugated board packaging applications.
A Barrier Coating, blocks the passage of various substances including; water, moisture vapor, oils and grease under a wide range of conditions and temperatures. Moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), sometimes called water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), is a measure of the passage of water vapor through a substrate during a period of time. There are many applications where moisture control is critical.
Foods and Moisture Sensitive Products are packaged with Barrier Coated paperboard material in order to control the MVTR and achieve the required quality, safety, and shelf life.
In the building and construction industry, barrier coatings and membranes are used to improve water resistance and MVTR to control the flow rate of water vapor.
The Values of a Barrier Coating are that it provides – Package Protection, Improved Appearance, Higher Productivity, Environmentally friendly and provides a Longer shelf-life for your products. Barrier coating performance usually improves when multiple layers are applied to the substrate.

All of our Barrier Coatings can be custom formulated for various degrees of water, grease and oil resistance depending on the substrate and final use requirements.
Barrier coatings can be applied by conventional dispersion coating equipment, or by a printing press. The coatings are easy to handle, and safe to apply.
Cattie Adhesives offers a range of barrier coatings that are designed to protect surfaces from damage caused by moisture, chemicals, and other environmental factors. These coatings can be applied to a variety of substrates, including paper, plastic, and metal, to provide long-lasting protection against corrosion, tarnishing, and other forms of deterioration.
Our barrier coatings are formulated with advanced materials that are engineered to provide superior adhesion, flexibility, and durability. They are available in both water-based and solvent-based formulations, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.
Some of the key features of our barrier coatings include:
- Resistance to Moisture: Our barrier coatings are designed to protect substrates from the damaging effects of moisture. This is particularly important in applications where the substrate is exposed to water or high levels of humidity.
- Chemical Resistance: Our barrier coatings provide excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals, including acids, bases, solvents, and oils. This makes them ideal for use in industrial and manufacturing settings where chemicals are present.
- High Adhesion: Our barrier coatings are formulated with advanced materials that provide excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates, including metal, plastic, and paper. This ensures that the coating stays in place and provides long-lasting protection.
- Flexibility: Our barrier coatings are engineered to be flexible, which allows them to conform to the shape of the substrate and resist cracking and peeling.
- UV Resistance: Some of our barrier coatings are formulated with UV stabilizers that provide protection against the damaging effects of sunlight and other forms of UV radiation.
