Which Edgebanding Adhesive? EVA vs APAO vs PUR

Your panel must hold its edge where it ends up. Pick the glue by end use first, then edge material, then bander.

Which edgebanding adhesive should I use?

Choose EVA when a remeltable glue line is enough and you want a simpler, lower-cost line. Choose APAO (Cattie 7-470) for high heat resistance on HPL and solid woods Call 800-249-0337 to confirm whether your substrate needs a primer with 7-470. Choose PUR (Cattie 8600) when the edge must resist heat and moisture after cure, such as kitchens, baths and labs, and your bander has a sealed or moisture-protected melt system.

All three are hot melts and all three run on edgebanders. They differ in how they set, what they resist afterward, and what they ask of your melt system.

Heat and moisture resistance after cure8600 PUR: ~4000 cps at 250°F, ~4 min open, runs at 235 to 275°F. 8600 typically takes about 24 hours to full cure. PUR in general typically gives handling strength in minutes and builds much of its strength in the first day; full cure typically takes 1 to 7 days, depending on moisture, temperature and glue line

8600 comes in 2 kg slugs, 40 lb pails, 260 g standard cartridges (about 63 mm diameter, for common edgebanding machines) and 425 lb drums. Full stock grade list: edgebanding adhesives.

Contains reactive isocyanate. Read the SDS before use; use ventilation and protective gear; hot melt can cause burns. Call us for data sheets

Slow vs fast lines

Faster feed rates need faster set; slower or manual and contour work needs more open time. Cattie can formulate custom grades for fast set or longer open time. Tell us the feed rate.

Edgebanding adhesive FAQ

Is PUR better than EVA for edgebanding?

For heat and moisture resistance after cure, yes. PUR does not remelt once cured. EVA is simpler to run and lower cost, and is enough for many dry-room furniture jobs.

What is APAO edgebanding hot melt?

APAO is an amorphous polyolefin hot melt. Cattie 7-470 is a high heat-resistant APAO for HPL and solid woods. Call 800-249-0337 to confirm whether your substrate needs a primer with 7-470.

Which Cattie grade is for PUR edgebanding?

8600: fast tack PUR, about 4000 cps at 250°F, about 4 minutes open time, run at 235 to 275°F. 8600 typically takes about 24 hours to full cure. PUR in general typically gives handling strength in minutes and builds much of its strength in the first day; full cure typically takes 1 to 7 days, depending on moisture, temperature and glue line.

Does PUR need special equipment on my bander?

PUR needs a sealed or moisture-protected melt system, and it must be purged before it cures in the tank. Call 800-249-0337 with your bander and melt unit to confirm fit.

How do I get an edgebanding sample?
