Tackifiers can be up to about 40% of a hot melt or PSA and a large share of the cost. They raise tack by lowering modulus and raising Tg of a rubbery base polymer (the opposite of a plasticizer). Useful molecular weight is roughly 600–1800: some cohesion, no weak boundary layer. They must wet the substrate and, in a melt, stay heat-stable — unsaturated resins can gel in the pot.
