Wire-wound rods are cheap and coat-weight flexible. The usual complaint is machine-direction lines, called rod streaks, blamed on the wire or on grit under the rod. Photographs of a rod coater running show the count and frequency of those streaks change with machine settings. They track the same ribbing you see in roll coating.
