How to choose a hot-melt coating and laminating line

Match the coater to viscosity, coat weight, and speed. A waxer will not run a true hot melt until you raise heat, metering, and drive control.

Conventional waxers handle straight and lightly modified waxes. Without changes they cannot use the viscosity of real hot melts. A newer family of machines does: gravure, reverse roll, kiss, slotted-head (die / slotted-head coaters), extrusion coating, and curtain coating. Most lines can also laminate. Many plants add chemical or electrostatic treaters, preheat, or post-heat.

In-plant mods on older waxers: more heat, doctor blades to meter the melt, variable-speed drives. That can move a coater from about 100 cps to 5,000 cps or more at low speed. Past that you need a machine built for hot melt.
